Different Mental Health Conditions

A mental disorder is when an individual faces disruption to emotional regulation or behaviour. There are many different forms of mental disorders, and can impact any range of people.

These include:

  1. Anxiety Disorders

  2. Depression

  3. Bipolar Disorder

  4. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

  5. Schizophrenia

  6. Eating Disorders

  7. Disruptive behaviour and dissocial disorders

  8. Neurodevelopmental disorders

Specifically, many who have faced humanitarian disasters are vulnerable, or experience some form of mental health disorder as a result. The top three most common mental health disorders associated with war consist of anxiety, PTSD, and depression.

The most commonly seen mental health issues in those who have experienced war

  • Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, or PTSD, is a condition very commonly associated with those who have experienced a particularly horrifying event. A person can experience fear of a relapse of the event (through flashbacks, nightmares etc), avoidance of situations which are reminiscent of the event, or the perception of constantly being in danger. PTSD carries the ability to take over people’s lives, impact relationships, and increase feelings of loneliness and hopelessness.

  • Excessive fear and distress that can result in impairment to actions. There are different forms of anxiety disorders, such as generalised anxiety disorder (excessive worry), panic disorder (panic attacks), social anxiety disorder (fear and worry in social situations), and separation anxiety disorder (fear of separation), to name a few. Anxiety can influence one's actions, thoughts, ability to complete tasks, and generally overtake a person’s life and daily activities.

  • When experiencing depression, or a depressive episode, a person will often feel sad, irritable or empty, have a loss of interest in activities that previously brought pleasure, poor concentration, hopelessness, low self worth, increased tiredness, and loss in energy. Those who experience depression cannot choose to stop feeling depressed, as it is all consuming. This too, can disrupt relationships, careers, and daily tasks.

Mental health disorders will overtake a person’s life in one aspect or another, and play a significant role in the lives of those who have experienced war. Additionally, these mental health disorders often come hand in hand, and it is important to treat them simultaneously to ensure improvement.
